New Signage

The campus will soon have new pedestrian signage! The worn, wooden signs around campus will be replaced with low cost ($30-$50 each) sign plates and the poles will be repainted. This is an interim step towards improving signage on campus. As part of our planning process, the College's Campus Master Plan will be updated. This update will include an evaluation of campus signage, traffic flow patterns, walkways, and building needs and will help determine how to improve directional signage across campus. In the meantime, these new signs will be more visible and attractive. Thanks to all those involved in making this happen.

The new signs look great and so much easier to read than the old ones. It is very exciting to see topics discussed during the focus group become reality.

One area that I see as a problem, especially at the beginning of the term, is the confusion about where the bookstore is located. Perhaps there is a way that the bookstore can put up temp signs like the WIA uses for a couple of weeks before and at the beginning of school to easily direct people.

AND some directional info inside buildings, especially those that are numbered unuaually, would be nice - kind of a "you are here" sign.

Thanks - Debbie

These signs will provide much improved directional information. I do hope, that when a master plan is completed, that it will include all accessibility features (automatic doors, elevators, etc.) as well as ramps, inclines, covered walkways, etc. We have been lacking an adequate plan that students with disabilites can access and use productively.

1. Ditto on the accessibility issues. I have noticed and have heard from students that accessibility varies greatly from building to building. This is definitely frustrating to people in their day-to-day use of the campus.
A textured(?) campus map for blind students would be good, too. I met a blind student who was trying to navigate B-building from verbal instructions on a tape-player. That can't be easy.

2. Yes, very nice & visible signs!

A-Building and especially C-Building could definitely use some additional signs to help with finding numbered rooms.

Even in B-Building, I often find students pushing open my office door (B-6a) hoping to find room B-7 next to the classroom B-6... not a strange expectation, except for all the things on my door that say it is not the Assessment Center. I think people easily confuse the 2 halls of B-building. It would be nice to have some (indoor and) outdoor signs like the WIA ones, to help people find the Assessment Center, too.

This week I have students begin a project for the design of directional information in our campus buildings. They will start with A building and use it as a model for others. This is the second time this project was assigned. The last time was in 2006. You may see some examples placed in A building but only long enough to take photographs. Let me know what you think when the time comes.
